After Oak Grove-Coburn, a private Quaker school in Vassalboro, ME, was closed and its facilities sold, the Oak Grove School Foundation was established to provide financial assistance to Central Maine schools and nonprofits. Since its establishment, the foundation has given thousands of dollars in grants.
OGSF distributes funds primarily via the operation of two grant programs: major grants and mini grants. Major grants of up to $5,000 are open by application to non-profit groups in Central Maine, with the annual major grant applications due the first Friday in April.
The mini grants program is by invitation only. The foundation maintains a cyclical list of high schools that are invited to apply for grants every few years. Each mini grant awarded is a maximum of $1,000; however, every member of staff at the invited schools is eligible to apply. The deadline for mini grants is the first Friday in October. The Sandy River Charitable Foundation contributes to our mini grant fund.
OGSF owns and contributes to the maintenance of the Oak Grove Chapel (River Meetinghouse) in Vassalboro, ME. This historic chapel, built in 1786, is on the National Register of Historic Places. A separate nonprofit, Friends of the River Meetinghouse, are the primary caretakers of the chapel.
